Kindle Fire amounts for 22% of Tablet Market Share in US, claims Amazon

The press release by Amazon on Thursday has claimed that the Amazon Kindle Fire accounted for a massive 22% of the sales in the United States tablet market. But surprisingly it didn’t delve into figures, abstaining from disclosing the number of units it has sold. The Kindle Fire, launched last November, was Amazon’s latest offering in the hugely popular Kindle series.

The press report claimed that Amazon had accounted for 22% of all tablet sales in the United States over a period of the last nine months. If this is true, then it places the Kindle Fire second in the list of the most popular tablets, right behind the Apple iPad. This is further proof of the Kindle Fire’s popularity, which is the best selling product of the Seattle-based company since its launch.

Goodbye to Kindle Fire?

It is widely reported that Amazon has said goodbye to the current Kindle Fire, Amazon’s first tablet with a colour screen and ability to run third party apps. It would be replaced by a newer version of the Fire. When the Kindle Fire was launched less than a year back, it immediately garnered quite a bit of success. This was due to Amazon’s superb marketing strategy, pricing it only at $199.

It is believed that Amazon would unveil its newest version of the Kindle Fire next Thursday at its event in Barker Hanger, in Santa Monica. Recent speculation is that, rather than going for a model with a larger screen, they would be targeting the 7-inch category yet again, this time with two different models.

Even though the Apple iPad dominates the market today, registering a massive 68% of all tablet sales in the second quarter of 2012, the Kindle Fire had managed to carve its own niche. Initially, it had made great strides, mostly owing to its amazing price tag, but slowly the sales figures fell due to lesser customer satisfaction than the Apple iPad.

The Kindle Fire may find it tough to fare in the market now, especially with Apple rumoured to be introducing its own mini iPad in the coming months. Other competing tablets include the Google Nexus 7 which has the same price as the Kindle Fire, but offers better features.
